Some interests outside of work
- Family: Married with two children, born in 2018 and 2024
- Scrabble: I have played tournament Scrabble since 1993, with peak rankings in the UK top 10 and world top 50 a few years ago. I was also a certified tournament director for the national players’ association (NASPA), and wrote their wiki pages on the international dictionary.
- Day hiking: Most commonly weekend walks in the Bay Area
- Road trips: I enjoy driving, interesting natural places like National Parks, and interesting city places like museums. So road trips work well.
- Reading: Mostly nonfiction, science, online articles, and audiobooks
- Motorsport: I have followed Formula 1 racing since 1985, and some American motorsport. A relatively minor interest now.
- Toastmasters: I attended this for public speaking between about 2010 and 2015 and gained Competent Communicator status.
- Astronomy & astrophysics: I retain a casual interest even though this is no longer my professional field. The forthcoming Universe Maps project is a reflection of this.
- United Kingdom and Taiwan: Our family has connections with these two places. Learning Mandarin Chinese is a long-term ambition.
